Monday Night Football odds: Redskins vs. Bears picks, predictions from proven expert who's 13-6 on Washington games

The Washington Redskins need to put a notch in the win column, while the Chicago Bears must ignite a stagnant offense when the NFC foes meet on Monday Night Football. Washington is 0-2, and another loss would be a major blow to any playoff aspirations. The Bears needed a 53-yard field goal after time appeared to expire to beat the Broncos last week, and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has been erratic, but the defense is Chicago's usual championship-caliber unit. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET at FedEx Field in the final game on the NFL schedule for Week 3. The Redskins have won 13 of the last 15 in the series, but Chicago is a 5.5-point favorite in the latest Bears vs. Redskins odds, and the over-under for total points scored is 41, down one from the opener. Before you make any Redskins vs. Bears picks and Monday Night Football predictions, see what top pro football expert Mike Tierney has to say.

A renowned sportswriter whose work appears in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has reported from seven Super Bowls. He is 13-6 all-time on NFL picks against the spread involving the Redskins, with a 4-0 run that includes his Week 2 pick on Dallas. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, as the NFL season starts sorting out contenders, Tierney has evaluated Bears vs. Redskins from every angle and locked in his Monday Night Football picks. You can only see them at SportsLine.

Tierney knows the Bears are No. 4 in the NFL in total defense, allowing just 292.5 yards per game. Against the run, they're No. 5 at a scant 68.5 yards, while their 12.0 points allowed is third. In Week 1, Green Bay rushed for a paltry 2.1 yards per carry against the Monsters of the Midway, with Jamaal Williams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling combining for six carries for zero yards.

Last week, the Broncos' Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman combined for 3.8 yards per carry. Against Denver at Mile High, the Bears added four tackles for loss, six pass deflections, and their kicking game, the eyesore of last season, came through with the game-winner. The Broncos' Emmanuel Sanders was the lone pass-catcher to top 50 yards against Chicago's secondary.

But just because Chicago has a championship-level defense doesn't mean it will win or cover the Redskins vs. Bears spread on Monday Night Football.

Some fans are clamoring for rookie Dwayne Haskins to take over at quarterback, but Case Keenum has passed for 601 yards and five touchdowns and is completing 69.1 percent of his passes. Rookie receiver Terry McLaurin, a third-round pick, has been a surprise with 10 catches for 187 yards, and Keenum has reliable targets in tight end Vernon Davis (11 receptions) and Paul Richardson (10). Washington's running game has struggled, but the team has a solid veteran presence in Adrian Peterson.

The defense, expected to be a strength coming into the season, has had its troubles, so facing a stagnant Bears offense could be a chance to turn it around. The Bears turned the ball over 24 times last year, half on interceptions by Trubisky.

We can tell you Tierney is leaning under, and he's also isolated the critical x-factor that has him all over one side of the spread. He's only sharing it what it is, and who to back, over at SportsLine.

Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders: Game preview and prediction

Outside of the Antonio Brown drama, the Oakland Raiders look better than they have the last couple years heading into the season. Derek Carr will be entering his second season under Jon Gruden’s system, along with having a much improved group of skill players around him.Outside of the Antonio Brown drama, the Oakland Raiders look better than they have the last couple years heading into the season. Derek Carr will be entering his second season under Jon Gruden’s system, along with having a much improved group of skill players around him.

The offensive line protecting Derek Carr is improved, as well, but they will be missing key pieces in Richie Incognito and Gabe Jackson for the first couple of weeks. Outside of that, Kolton Miller should be much improved in his sophomore season, and Trent Brown has received high praise from the coaching staff and media who has watched him practice.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Raiders should be improved at all positions, but still are a far way from an elite defense. The Raiders used two of their three first round draft picks on Clelin Ferrell and Johnathan Abram in an attempt to boost their defense with not only key players, but leaders for years to come.

The Raiders also added defensive captain Vontaze Burfict, a player that has worked in this defense for the majority of his career, and Lamarcus Joyner, one of the best slot corners/safeties in the NFL.

The Denver Broncos head to Oakland with new coaching, a new QB, and a chip on their shoulder. Their pass rush will be good as always, so the Raiders offense will be tested early.

It will be a heated rivalry game to open the Oakland Raiders season, and one that the Raiders have a good chance at winning at that.

Houston Texans vs. New Orleans Saints: Game preview, odds and more

With Monday’s Houston Texans vs. New Orleans Saints game just around the corner, I wanted to take the chance to combine a few of my favorite things: football, writing and betting all in one article.

I wanted to dive in and look at all the lines and props, plus pick out the best ones to put your wagers on. In addition, this is an opportunity to preview the Monday night season opener for the Texans and Saints.

This game will be the first time that these two teams have matched up in four years with the all-time series currently tied at 2-2. The Texans won the most previous meeting in 2015 by a 24-6 score in Houston.

The Saints have an offensive trio of quarterback Drew Brees, running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Michael Thomas, all three being Top 10 players at their respective positions. Last season, Brees passed for 3,992 yards with 32 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Kamara rushed for 883 yards with 14 touchdowns, plus caught 81 passes for 709 yards with four touchdowns a season ago. As for Thomas, he is entering the ’19 season coming off a year where he collected 1,405 yards with 125 receptions, including nine touchdowns.

The Texans have a trio of their own this season, but it includes quarterback Deshaun Watson, running back Duke Johnson and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Watson in ’18 totaled 4,165 yards passing with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. With the Cleveland Browns last season, Johnson rushed for 201 yards on 40 carries, but also had 47 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns.

Then there is Hopkins, who is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Hopkins finished last season with 115 receptions for 1,572 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Texans at Saints kicks off at 7:10 p.m. ET (6:10 CT) on ESPN. Now some odds for the game:

Texans vs. Saints (-6.5)
When I checked on this game earlier this week, the Saints were seven-and-a-half point favorites. Since then, 51 percent of bets have gone the Saints’ way, but a whopping 70 percent of the money on the game is on the Texans. Now the Saints are the favorites at -6.5, according to Bovada.

The huge money shift has caused the line to drop a nearly whole point, making it an even more favorable bet if you want to take the Saints, which would be my pick.
That one point makes a huge difference. The Saints would’ve had to win by more than a touchdown to cover before, but now a touchdown is enough to cover the spread.

Over/Under (52)
This one is split right down the middle for bettors including 52.5 percent of bets and 57 percent of the money on the game has the over, and I would have to agree.

The Saints have a high-powered offense that could cause issues for the Texans, especially through the air. The Texans’ offense, while not quite that of New Orleans, should still be able to put up some points against what is a good defense for the Saints.
 Rushing Attempts – Deshaun Watson, O/U 6.5
The strength of this Saints defense is definitely their secondary. The front seven of New Orleans is good, but not nearly as good as the defensive backs and safeties.

That being said, I do expect Cameron Jordan to get some pressure on Watson a couple of times. I think Watson will take a couple of sacks and run a few times, but I don’t see him scrambling more than four or five times.

Receptions – Alvin Kamara, O/U 5
This week’s Texans vs. Saints game will be decided in the air. Both teams have decent run games, but the aerial offense is the strength of both sides.

That being said, I believe Kamara will have a huge impact catching passes out of the backfield. I think he’ll pick up at least five or six receptions, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see him catch significantly more and have a much larger role than expected.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this should be a good game between two playoff contenders. I don’t believe the Texans have what it takes to overcome the Saints for the win, as the Saints should be a Super Bowl contender once again this year. The Texans should hang in the game for the full 60 minutes and give them a fight, making for an exciting night of football.
